So we arrived in Berlin on the 31st, things didn't start as smoothly as they could have because the S-Bahn (which is like the tube but over ground) stopped just before our Train Station, this was because they were doing some work on the tracks. This meant we had to get a replacement bus, but the signs were so unclear and we didn't really know where we were going and we had to carry all of our bags! But we finally got to A&O hostel. Later that evening we went out for dinner at a Vietnamese restaurant called the lucky duck, the food reminded me a bit of Yo Sushi!
We spent our first full day in Berlin visiting checkpoint Charlie, it's located near the Underground Station; Kochstraße. We went to the museum and it was really interesting and emotional as it gave you a sense of how horrible it would have been to have your city split into two by a wall. We then went to Alexanderplatz which is Berlins main square. There were loads of things to do there, loads of markets and food stalls as well as street puzzles to complete, it was quite fun. The TV tower is also located in the square so we decided to go up that, it cost 14euro for an adult ticket. There were great views of berlin and it was nice to see where everything was, we took lots of pictures and stayed up there for 2 hours!
The next day it was raining so we went back to Alexanderplatz to do some shopping in the main mall...its a massive pink building! when the rain had stopped we went to Potsdamer Platz and saw the sony centre, then we wondered down to the jewish memorial. It was really impressive, there were grey blocks placed in an area and some reached highs of 5meters. We took a few photos and then moved on the Brandenburg gate. There were lots of people around which created a nice atmosphere. We then got a bratwurst from a street food shop, if youre feeling brave the Curry wurst is very popular in Germany. We then waited until sunset which was about 9pm to see the gate with its lights, it was very beautiful especially with the pink sky in the background. Then we went to head back to the hostel but the S-Bahn closes at 9 so we spent another hour and 45min getting on replacement buses, underground and then finally an S-Bahn that was working. Its definitely worth checking what time the last train goes!
On our final full day we went to go see the east side gallery, this was my faviourite thing to visit while in berlin. Its about 1.2km long and its worth the walk, the art is so interesting and a great way to show off the berlin wall. If youre into street art, graffiti or just modern day art, this is definitely worth a visit! We then caught the S-Bahn to museum island. Under 18s have free entry so we thought we might as well have a look. It wasn't my favourite visit, but if youre into history then museum island is for you. We decided to just sit on the grass next to the musuems and relax for a bit, berlin as free wifi almost everywhere so we connected to that. At around 5:30 we got hungry so ate at an irish pub, ive been craving baked beans so I had a full English (or full irish breakfast). Then Emi wanted to try some spaghetti eis so we caught the S-Bahn to Potsdamer Platz and went to café e gelato. It looked pretty impressive when it arrived, I had a crepe with ice cream and strawberries. It was all so yummy but we were so full! Definitely went a bit OTT on the pudding because we didn't manage to finsh it, but I would definitely recommend a spaghetti eis if you're in Germany.
Overall I had a lot of fun in berlin and would definitely come back here!
