After a really long 6 hour train journey we made it to Budapest kelenföld train station. It was really poorly signed so we spent quite some time looking for the main entrance to ask about getting to Budapest-nyugati station, as that is where we needed to get to. Eventually we found it and after struggling to communicate with someone at the information desk, we found out that we needed to get the metro. After some searching and using lots of hand gestures to communicate with the locals, we found the metro line 4! It's at the opposite end to the main entrance. The metro is basically Budapest's version of the tube; it was easy to navigate. We had to change at kálvin tér to line number 3 towards Nyugati. Then from there it was a 10min walk to our hostel.
We're staying at paprika hostel 2, at which a friendly Irish lady greeted us at reception and showed us to our beds. It's a nice hostel, beds are standard and they provide big lockers. There's only 2 bathrooms so it's a competition to get them, but they're not horrible. They also have a common room and kitchen which is great and the atmosphere is friendly. The location is really good as well, although it's very noisy at night so ear plugs were needed!
On the first night when we arrived we decided to go see the city; the time was about 8pm so it was dark and the lights were on. We ate at this nice Italian restaurant before wondering through the streets to get to the chain bridge. One thing I've noticed is that Budapest is full of young people! There were loads of places for young people to hang out at. We walked along the chain bridge and then walked further to get a view of Parliament. It was all really pretty with the lights. Then we found an outside bar and sat and had a drink. There were lots of young people enjoying a drink as well which gave off a nice vibe, music was playing in the background and there was an amazing view of the chain bridge.
Another thing I've noticed is that you'll walk a lot in Budapest! That night we walked 7 miles!
The next two days we spent touring the city on a bus. I'd recommend Big Bus tour company because not only is it the best way to see the city, I think, but you can also use it to transport you to different places. Their service is really good and you get discounts if you use them again in other cities such as Vienna. I also recommend this company because we originally bought tickets with Hop on Hop Off tour bus but we stood waiting for an hour and no bus arrived! But thankfully we got a refund. We stopped off at Heroes Square where there's the park and zoo, and also baths which we went to! Széchenyi thermal baths are a must if you go to Budapest! We had a great time, it was really relaxing and so warm! We also went to Margaret's island which is a must as well! They have great fountain water displays in the day and at night after 9pm. Ruin pubs are also recommended, we went to szimpla Kert pub in the Jewish region. They're decorated really well with lots of old bits and bobs everywhere, I bought some things from their shop as well. We also went on a river cruise which was free with our ticket, it was nice seeing the city from another perspective.
Overall Budapest is a beautiful city with lots of history as well as a great youthful atmosphere! I'd definitely come here again.
