Family arrive!

Dumela!

I’m writing a little update on request from my mother. My family arrived late on Friday (7th) to beautiful gate! It was great to see them, I had a meal ready for their arrival and they unpacked 25 pairs of PJs for BG children as well as some things for me from people at home. Thank you so much to everyone who generally gave things, I’m now working my way through 64 orange club bars! Yesterday we drove round Maseru and listened to the parents reminisce (they used to live in Maseru when I was a baby) I showed them round a bit and we ate lunch at ‘oh la la’ a French restaurant. We then made it back to BG for afternoon play group. I introduced the family to some of my kids and my house mother, m’me Judith who was one of the original house mothers with ray and sue. It was great introducing my family to my Basotho mum!

Today we went to Malealea, we rode horses to the gorge. It was great fun being together as a family again and having fun on the horses. Dad even managed to ride one even though he was over the weight limit by quite a bit (sorry dad)! But in true African style, rules don’t really apply. The views were beautiful and it was great riding in places where you can only get to by horse or by walking. We saw a lot of cattle and shepherd boys herding their animals. It was so nice and peaceful, the only noises we heard were from the cattle bells, no sound of any engines or busyness you get in the western world.

The family are here for two weeks, they’ll help out at BG for a bit before we go exploring some of South Africa and Swaziland. Their arrival has come in perfect time, I’m very ready for a rest and to see a new bit of scenery so I can be refreshed for the rest of my time at BG.

I hope everyone at home is well

E x

A little addendum from Helen about the photos. The centre photo shows Maseru United Church in the background which is where Emily was dedicated just before we left Lesotho. We have lots of happy memories of families from the church. Unfortunately we couldn’t go inside. The family are standing in a new war memorial area opposite the church which has a Spitfire donated last year by the UK in memory of the fact that the Basotho raised money by public donation to buy quite a few (25?) for the British airforce in the 2nd WW. The photo on the right is taken in the same place that the 3 of us stood (or rather we were holding Emily) after she was dedicated. In the original photo we had a tank behind us ( some of you will remember that we had to evacuate due to civil unrest). The photo on the left is half way through our pony trek today. It took both John and Oliver to help me get back on the horse!
