Lesotho: Day 9

Hello!

So I now have a better idea of what my time here at BG will look like. Mondays-Fridays I will wake up at 7am and get ready to go to my house, Nala, for 8am. I then help my house mothers feed the kids and get them ready for play group.

From 8:30-11 the older kids who can walk go to play group. This is where they play with toys, sing songs and mess around. If the weathers nice they can go outside. The younger ones go to soft play where they are encouraged to develop skills such as sitting up, crawling and walking. During this time volunteers are put on a rota- I could be in soft play or play group. I also have a chance to take a small group of kids away from everyone else and let them play with toys that need more close supervision. This could be colouring, painting, sticking, reading etc. There is another opportunity to have a 'one on one' with a kid. This often involves taking a kid to the library in the chapel to do some reading, or do a puzzle with them.

Then at 10am they have a snack and I help feed those who need feeding. Around 12pm the kids go back to their houses for lunch. I help with lunch and then ask my house mother whether anything else needs to be done before having a rest while the kids nap. The rest is roughly between 1-3pm.

Then at 3-4pm it's outdoor play if the weather is nice. This is a great time to just have fun with the kids! Dinner is at 4pm. In my house we have a lot of babies so dinner can take along time. I help prepare the meal and feed those who need feeding. 5 of our kids can feed themselves and they all say this pray together before they eat- Father, we thank you for the food AMEN! It's very sweet! I also make up bottles for the babies. Our youngest is 3 months old- he threw up on me the other day. Then I ask my house mother whether I can do anything else, I usually leave at 5:30/6pm. I'm then free to do whatever I like!

On Thursdays all the volunteers go round Emily's house (she helps look after long term volunteers). We are also sometimes invited round for dinner at other people's places or we go out to dinner in Maseru. But most of the time I cook dinner and chill for the evening, maybe throw in a game or two of dutch blitz.

The days are very long and tiring and I often have a nap in the middle of the day! (I know I'm sounding old!)

We have weekends off. Saturday is our chance to go explore Lesotho/ South Africa a little more and on Sundays we have African church. It can vary in length but last Sunday I think it was about a 3 hour service!

I've loved received messages from people who've read my blog! So thank you- it does help my day.
