Nice, France

Hello!

I know I haven't written in ages! I've been busy with life in the UK, I started university so haven't had much time or money to travel! But I did manage to fit in this little trip to Nice last week with my boyfriend.

In January I was looking on google flights to see if there were any cheap deals going and we came across flights to Nice during our Easter break. I've also subscribed to Jack's flight club which gives me regular emails about cheap flights, this inspired our little trip.

I then started to look into accommodation, I knew I didn't want to stay in a hotel or hostel because they would be pricey, so I searched for places on Airbnb. I absolutely adore Airbnb and would recommend it any day! It's a great way to see a place from a local’s perspective and, depending on what you get, its cheap. We stayed in this lovely apartment near the port. It wasn't a touristy place at all which was lovely! Everyone around us was French and there was a cute little French bakery right at the end of our road which we bought fresh croissants and pain au chocolat from every morning for breakfast. The buildings around us were quite big and coloured in different shades of white, oranges and reds with beautiful French decoration and balconies. To get to the old town and the market we would walk along this long street with local shops and fruit and veg stalls. It was a lovely walk and took us about 10 minutes. The weather was great too and the sun would warm up my shoulders and arms in the mornings as we walked.

On the first day we climbed up ‘castle hill’. To get there we went through a lot of little narrow streets which was beautiful as we would come across typically French looking windows with laundry hanging from washing lines outside. There were a lot of road works going on as I think they were building a new tram line, so on our way up the hill we managed to find ourselves in the middle of a building site. A kind French man saw that we were not local and kindly pointed us in the right direction, away from the diggers. The climb was quite steep, but we could see amazing views as we went up. We stopped and took a lot of photos! Once at the top we could see Nice’s orange rooftops and the promenade. It was truly amazing. We also saw planes coming in to land at the airport, some of them were quite low!

The next day we took a trip to Monaco. We caught the bus 100 from the port which was a 5-minute walk from our Airbnb. The ticket cost us €1.50 each for the journey which took about 35-40mins. It was quite busy on the bus, but we managed to get a seat! The views were amazing, I would definitely recommend getting the bus to Monaco instead of the train. When we got there, we paid for a hop-on-hop-off bus tour. I actually really like these buses, especially when you don’t know much about the city. They’re a great way to get around, they give you interesting facts and information about the place and they show you the best things to see. We first walked down to the port to have a look at all the expensive boats and cars. We then caught the bus which took us to the palace at the top of this hill. We ate our packed lunch here and looked at the amazing views. This was the old part of the city, so it had lots of cute houses and streets to wonder down. There’s also an oceanic museum which apparently is very popular, but we didn’t go in.

We also stopped off at the casino which was a lot of fun! Its free to go inside and have a look. It’s very beautiful inside, the toilets were also nice and free! We decided we wouldn’t be good at gambling so didn’t pay to go into the gambling section, you also had to be dressed up in order to enter and we definitely did not look the part!

On the last day we continued to explore Nice. We walked along the promenade, explored the old town and market, had a look at the main shopping street and sat in a cute café called ‘Emilie and the cool kids’. Near the main shopping street is a beautiful square with a fountain and a chequered floor. It looked beautiful especially with big decorated old buildings surrounding the square. The atmosphere was lively with street artists performing and crowds gathering round to watch clowns and acrobats and mime artists.

Overall our trip was lovely. Nice is a beautiful city to explore for 3-4 days.
